Saradha Nivas is a conventional posh villa designed by Genesis for an industrialist friend Mr.Jawahar at Madurai. The client had lavish tastes for expensive stuff like teak wood work, Italian marble, Italian furniture, imported fittings, etc...It was an interesting experience to try out all high end stuff.

One of the most recent projects of 'Genesis' for Mr.Chandrasekar (PCS ) . Madhu Arcade , our first project for PCS, is where the 'Genesis' office is situated.Over the years, PCS and his family have become good friends and when they wanted to build their dream house it was a great opportunity to experiment my 'isms'! The final design overcame the main constraints of Vasthu sastra and a limited site area... The result is a colorful modern villa that appears more spacious than the actual area it occupies...

a play of light, colors and contours...we were very particular not to disturb the beautiful mango and neem trees in front...

the living hall..play of arches...landscaped courtyard adds life to the interiors...

Xpress- a modern photo lab & studio that I designed for my friend Ashokkumar at Goripalayam, Madurai. The interior is a vibrant play of curves and colors . Its one of the works were I sometimes even worked as a carpenter, tile layer, painter and what not...The work received national attention when it was published in the prestigious JIIA (journal of the Indian Institute of Architects) July 2004 issue.

Lalitha Mahal, Madurai

'Lalitha mahal' at Anna Nagar, Madurai for my friend CT (of Chidambaram Transport) was done with extremely difficult constraints, viz., intricate requirements, vasthu sasthra, an existing 800 sft structure that couldn't be disturbed and finally CT who was caught between different ideas! . As I couldn't do much about the exterior due to the above constraints , I put some effort in the interiors to reflect the 'chettinad type' house in a modern style to reflect the clients background.

This would have been one of my favorite projects had it been built the way i concieved it. Half way through the project, the client began to interfere with stupid ideas from his wife that i was fully pissed off and walked out of the project.

This is the first design i gave for the scan & x-ray block at the Booma nursing Home,Madurai. The angles and 'de-con' dynamics frightened the client and i was forced to redesign it along convention. Even though the finished design is a neat building, I have a big disappointment that its not standing according to my initial conception...a reminder that Madurai was not ready for 'de-con' !

This is the original design i gave for a private client , intended for a bank at Karaikudi. But the finished product was goofed up by the client's son (US return with fancy ideas) and the local contractor . Now this building looks the funniest in town with no visible links to my design. Another disappointing project for me...

An experiment with folded plates.This is the proposed Memorial for the a Late ex-minister of D.M.K .This memorial was planned by his family to keep his memory alive. The design was also published in Tamil weeklys but never saw the light of day.

Rajamani sangaralingam porch

Rajamani Sangaralingam arangam is a wedding hall designed by Madurai's most prolific architect Ar.Y.R.Ramnath almost a decade ago. The client wanted a new front Porch with a fresh look that would be the new image of the building at the same time serving its purpose. I was always interested in vaults and saw an opportunity to try one...in fact ended up with three. The central concrete vault spans 6 mts at base and has a 3 mts cantilever at each end. This is one simple project i feel proud about!

If there is a project that confused me the most, its this one. Started as an
office building and ended up as a restaurant ! I have absolutely no idea what they did in the interior. This building is the first in Madurai to have a steel cladding for the facade-columns . The building stands in contrasting style to the others in the bypass road.

In Madurai, Apartment housing never had the kind of patronage that they enjoy in cities like Chennai or Coimbatore. Group housing is fairly a new idea and people mostly preferred individual houses. But the late 90s saw a sudden boom in this industry due to a sudden raise in the purchasing power of the middle class and easy housing loans. Old houses were demolished and converted to apartments. Also apartments started springing up in newly developed fringes of the city mainly targeting the middle and upper middle class budget and tastes. This design is one such proposed at pudur extension for Vilas Builders.

One of the most prestigious projects of Genesis. Ananda College was designed for the diocese of Sivaganga at the outskirts of Devakottai. The entire project was funded and approved by agencies in the US.

a century old church at the fishing village of Muthupettai (en route to Rameshwaram) was demolished and this new church was designed. Roy builders did an appreciable job in a remote village with constraints of skilled labour and limited budget.

This church was built at the remote village of Pulikanmoi near kalayarkoil (sivagangai dist.) The building evoked mixed response. Some said its great...Some commented that it was too modern in concept for a rural church..Some said it is copied from a foreign church...some said it didn't look like church at all with the traditional steeple missing...! The final finished building didn't match exactly with my expectations but then again it was a challenging work for Roy builders in a remote area with limited funds.

"alta vista" is easily one of my favorite projects...This residence at Gynanaolivu puram, Madurai was designed for my school friend James and hence you can easily see the liberties i took. It was a small narrow plot with one common wall sharing with the neighboring house. The house can be experienced only if you visit it and cannot be explained with photos or words!

This should be my first popular project...It was my aunt's house and hence I could take some liberties in planning...like introducing an interior court , interesting levels, etc. People don't believe that its a limited budget house when they see it.This house i should say brought me quite a popularity among middle class clients and my relatives. Lot of credit should go to my Uncle (Prof.Jeyakumar) for giving me a free hand in the design and for maintaining the residence spic and span.

Music and Architecture...
Two exciting worlds collide here. The project actually is my Masters' thesis work at the School of Architecture and Planning, Chennai. An attempt to trace the link between music and architecture... an attempt to give shape to music. The research was experimented in the design of a music Gurukulam.. The built forms drew their inspiration from Vanraj Bhatia's "Earth" from the elements series, based on the raga 'desh'...from the overall campus planning(macro) to the elemental detailings(micro) , the design gives physical shape to "earth"...
